Austronesian은 특정 한 나라나 한 민족을 뜻하지 않고 매우 넓은 언어·문화권을 가리킨다. Polynesian은 그 안의 일부 지역·집단을 가리킬 수 있고, Indonesian은 인도네시아라는 국가나 그 언어와 관련된 말이므로 범위가 다르다.
항상 Austronesian처럼 대문자로 쓴다. 사람을 가리킬 때는 단일한 인종이라는 뜻으로 오해되지 않도록, 보통 Austronesian peoples 또는 speakers of Austronesian languages처럼 구체적으로 쓰는 것이 안전하다.

[German]German Austronesisch에서 온 말로, 라틴어 계열의 austro- ‘남쪽’과 그리스어 nēsos ‘섬’에 해당하는 요소가 결합해 ‘남쪽 섬들의’라는 뜻을 바탕으로 만들어졌다.
austro- ‘남쪽의’ + nes- ‘섬’ + -ian ‘…에 속한, …와 관련된’
💡 Australia의 austro-를 ‘남쪽’과 연결하고, -nesian을 Polynesian의 ‘섬 지역’ 느낌과 연결하면 ‘남쪽 섬들의 언어권’으로 기억하기 쉽다.
