뉘앙스 · 쓰임
simultaneous는 단순히 ‘동시에’라는 뜻이지만, casual한 at the same time보다 격식 있고 객관적인 느낌입니다. concurrent도 비슷하지만 기간이나 과정이 겹쳐 진행된다는 느낌이 강하고, synchronous는 주로 시스템·기술·일정 등이 시간적으로 맞춰져 있다는 뜻으로 더 전문적입니다.
명사 앞에서 주로 쓰이며 simultaneous events, simultaneous translation, simultaneous attacks처럼 사용합니다. 한국어의 ‘동시통역’은 영어로 simultaneous interpretation이라고 하는 것이 정확하며, simultaneous translation도 쓰이지만 실시간 구두 통역에는 interpretation이 더 적절합니다.
