[Old English]story는 고대 프랑스어 estorie를 거쳐 라틴어 historia에서 온 말이고, telling은 고대 영어 tellan ‘말하다, 세다’에서 온 tell의 동명사형입니다. 두 단어가 결합해 ‘이야기를 말하는 것’이라는 뜻의 복합어가 되었습니다.
