underrated는 주로 사람, 영화, 음악, 제품 등이 마땅한 인정을 받지 못한다는 느낌이 강하다. undervalued는 경제적 가치나 기여도가 낮게 평가된다는 뜻에 더 가깝다. underestimated는 위험, 비용, 능력, 난이도처럼 실제 정도를 잘못 낮게 판단했다는 의미가 넓다.
일상 대화와 글 모두에서 쓰이는 중립적인 표현이다. “be underestimated by someone”처럼 수동 형태로 많이 쓰이며, “seriously/greatly/widely underestimated”처럼 부사와 함께 자주 쓴다. 동사형으로는 과거형과 과거분사형이 같은 형태이다.
